I didn't make it and it turned out to be a turning point in my life. I decided that I wasn't destined to be the next "Master" so I decided to change focus and go into medicine. I still enjoy playing trumpet. My three kids all play and I enjoy giving them pointers to help them along. The night before my Indiana audition I went to your office and was thrilled to meet you and several of your students (I was also impressed that at 10 or 11 at night you were all there). Even though my application wasn't successful I learned one of the more valuable lessons in life - things have a way of working out for the best. Message from Sam Tomaino, who is too cheap to buy a birthday card currently residing in California, wishes to say... Best wishes to the birthday boy! Happy Birthday Mr. Adam. From a 44 year old comeback player after a 23 year layoff. Never had a private teacher due to cost and location when I was a kid, but all I ever thought about when I was playing was "sound". Sound that was full & resonant. If it weren't for the internet and former students of yours (Mark Minasian, Pat Harbison, & Mr. Roth) I would never have known that there was an actual system to learn to play the trumpet this way. Thank you so much for all you have taught me. God Bless you and your day!!! Sam

Although these get-togethers may be getting "routine", I'm sure that when we're all there to "get this thing fired up", it'll be a real humdinger... (Hmmm...now how many "f"s were in that statement again?) Hope that we can put together a real kickin' brass choir for this one just like the one I played in at IU when Eric T and Didi Bowman and I were all in the section together. And of course, we'll need someone to conduct us on Komm Susser Tod and remind us not to push so hard that we blow it out the wrong hole! Best wishes, Kerry England (horn)

Mr. Adam--You may not remember me, so I'll start with a brief update. I was a trombone student of Tom Beversdorf from 1964 until 1970 or so. I spent lots of time in your brass choirs, and found the experience to be rewarding and fascinating. I went on to teach at UW--Stevens Point with one of your trumpet students, Bob Van Nuys. After that I spent 16 years at Youngstown State Univ. and am now in my 20th year as trombone professor at the University of North Texas. To this day, a week doesn't go by without some mention of your teaching and the influence that it had on me. I've reworked some of your routines for trombone and find them to be very successful. Your enthusiasm for teaching is something that I've tried to emulate for years now. Please enjoy your birthday celebration and know that I'm thinking about you and hoping you'll be celebrating many more to come!!

Message from Rick Winslow, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in California, wishes to say... Mr. Adam, Happy 85th B-Day! I believe that I have already sent a birthday greeting, but I don't recall. Also, I can now hide my own Easter eggs, so that explains my memory issue. But I do remember that your birthday is actually on Oct. 21st. I will be there in Bloomington by noon of Friday, Oct. 25th. I was unable to attend your 80th B-day party because I had a big jazz project, but I am looking forward to seeing my heroes, classmates and my former students that you taught. God Bless! P.S. I understand that Walt Blanton will be there! Be good to yourself and give my best to Dorothy and your family.

Message from Barry Springer, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in Missouri, wishes to say... Mr. Adam, Once again we gather to celebrate your birthday. Boy, these parties are sure a lot of fun! In one room are friends from IU, as well as players before and after my time there. Back in June, I was playing in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It turned out that Greg Wing, Bill Berggren, and Ed Sherry were in town at the same time. We all met at a club where Greg was playing (very inspiring!!) and afterwards hung out, talking, laughing and having a great time. It was as if we were long lost friends. The one thing we had in common (besides the trumpet) was having Bill Adam as our teacher. You had instilled in us, among other things, a sense of camaraderie and keeping friends in this business. We realized that evening that even though you were not there with us physically, your spiritual presence was "fired up" inside us. No matter where we go, if there is a student of yours in that city, we have a friend. Thank you for a very special gift. Happy Birthday. Barry Springer

Message from Greg Neer, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in Nevada, wishes to say... Dear Mr. Adam, Happy Birthday & my best wishes to you & your family. I'm sorry I will not see you & the rest of the gang during the celebration but my current gig will not allow me to be away at this time. Forgive me. I'm still playing lead trumpet for Clint Holmes in the main showroom at Harrah's in Las Vegas & think of you often as I utilize the many lessons you taught me with & without the trumpet. I cannot express with words just how grateful I am to have studied with you during the early 80's. Your wisdom has proven itself time and again both through my trumpet playing & my daily life. The lessons I've learned from you have greatly improved my life & for that I am forever indebted to you. I trust you are well & wish you health & happiness. Hopefully I'll get the chance to get away & see you soon on one of our scheduled breaks from the show. Until then, thank you again for all you've shared with me. The impact you've bestowed on my life is something I cherish every day. You are truly an amazing man. Greg Neer

Message from Henry Meredith, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in Canada, wishes to say... Fondest regards and noble birthday wishes to the dean of trumpet tutelage across the globe! Mr. Adam, you have been an inspiration to hundreds of trumpeters and brass players around the world. Not only your joie de vivre throughout your long playing and teaching career, but also your tireless and skillful guidance, your artistry and musicianship, your unique approaches to problem-solving, your good humour, your people skills, your scholarship and dedication, your "quietness of mind" which only focuses your energy and enthusiasm, your knowledge, and friendly persuasion, these things and more, have been a positive influence on several generations of players and teachers, and also upon their own students. As you have said, you teach life, health, and world citizenship through the trumpet! If only there were more artist teachers like you! May you have many many more birthdays, and many many more years of imparting your wisdom to those of us who still follow your principles as well as to several more generations of future trumpeters, brass players, and teachers. Three cheers, as you reach perhaps the midpoint of your illustrious career, and best wishes as well to your bride Dorothy and to your family!! :-) Your student and admirer, and fellow Colorado fan, Henry Meredith

Message from Jay Coble, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in Florida, wishes to say... Mr. Adam, I can't tell you how much I would love to be there to join in the celebration, but our 2nd baby is due Oct. 30th, so I had better stay by the nest. I want you to know that I think of you so often, and your teaching about the trumpet and especially about life have been a huge influence on me. Message from David A. Roth, who is a former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in New Jersey, wishes to say... Dear Mr. Adam, It was a little over five years ago when the Bill Adam Tribute Web Site was started and I can see from the inquiries I receive that interest in your teaching and your students continues to grow. I constantly get e-mail from trumpet players looking for lessons. It has been my joy to refer them to one of your students in their area, because I know they are about to embark on a wonderful journey to master the trumpet. Never have I known of anyone who has had such a positive impact on so many people as you have done and continue to do so. You always place the needs of the student to be your primary concern. You have done far more than taught the trumpet and music, you have taught citizenship. I wish you the very best on your birthday!!! Best wishes, David A. Roth, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey
