Message from James Olcott (olcottj@muohio.edu), who is a former/current
student of Bill Adam currently residing in the US United States, wishes to
say... Bill, a great happy birthday to you. Accolades about your teaching
and your personal integrity and strength of belief will come from all over
the place. Having worked with you enough times to know that all of those
accolades are earned and warranted, I will not need to parrot them, only
support and agree with them. When I first came to you I was in deep
depression over my problems at Miami University and my playing was suffering
mightily. The directions you sent me in made huge differences in just about
every aspect of my personal and professional focus. I am now a senior
professor at Miami, on several important committees,
Vice-President/President of the International Trumpet Guild, performing with
success in the Cincinnati tri-state area, and my work as a publisher of
music for trumpet ensemble is receiving national and international
recognition. I just wanted to let you know that you had something to do with
all of that. Happy birthday, sir!

sincerely.....thank you. Happy Birthday!!! Fred Powell

Message from Michael J. Barry (mjbarry@mindspring.com), who is a
former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in the US United
States, wishes to say... Best wishes to the birthday boy! Mr. Adam - I'm
sure you don't remember me, but I took a lesson from you in the fall of
1986. I came to IU to visit my girlfriend who was enrolled at the time in
IU's Early Music Program. At the time I was a student of Charlie Geyer's at
the Eastman School of Music, working on my Masters in Jazz/Contemporary
Media. I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed meeting you. Although 1
lesson is never sufficient from any good teacher, I remember 1 little gem
that you gave me that I try to live by - "Never try to dim another persons
light to make your light shine brighter". I've learned that when I live by
this rule success soon follows, and when I don't I get what I deserve. I
don't have a list of albums or movie credits (yet!! ) nor am I a
recognizable name like many of your incredible students. But in the brief
time our paths crossed you gave me something that has helped further my
career and enhanced my life. I'll always be grateful to you for that, and
will consider myself (in my own mind at least) a former student of yours. I
tip my hat to you and raise my glass... Happy Birthday, Mr. Adam! Best

Greetings Mr. Adam. I was at IU 68-72 and studied mainly with Mr. Davidson.
I did study with you one summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe that my
playing was indirectly affected by your teaching in that my freshman year I
studied with Walt Blanton, who straightened out my chops and set me on the
right path using you warm up materials, which I use to this day. Best
regards.

Although I'm Director of Bands at a small liberal arts college in the
Pacific Northwest I still find time to play as much as can - as recitalist,
Bach clinician, and principal trumpeter in a couple of chamber orchestras.
At least once or twice a year I'm asked to play extra with the Oregon
Symphony and that's fun too. My husband Paul and I have two children now:
John Martin, who is 4 (a real viking!) and Helen Lorraine, who is just 15
months and quite determined in everything she does. We are richly blessed.
Hey, when I think of you, I smile. Have a great birthday. Joan
Message from NORM YEAGER (415LOFTYLN@AOL.COM), who is a former/current
student of Bill Adam currently residing in the GE Georgia, wishes to say...
I studied with Rick Winslow for two years in Lexington Ky before he moved to
CA. I then had the privilege to study with you for two years. My lessons
with you were one of the highlights of my life! The first lesson you
expressed such an interest in the development of the person, not just the
development of the trumpet player. You recommended several books for pesonal
development, which I read. My career subsequently turned to business and I
am a CPA . However I cherish my time learning from you and value it deeply.
Often as I have faced challenges in my current field, I have those books to
fall back on for inspiration. Often I thought about writing to see if you
would reccommed other self improvement books, but hesitated. I'm still a
member of the ITG, still go to concerts and try to keep up with music as my
primary hobby. You will never know my excitment of finding your website
where I could see the love that all your former students share, but also to
find additional recommeded books to read. Again thank you for your life ,
your contribution you have made to so many, and your inspiration. VERY HAPPY
BIRTHDAY.

Message from Angie Nicholson (AngieNicholson@sprynet.com), who is a
former/current student of Bill Adam currently residing in the US United
States, wishes to say... Best wishes to the birthday boy! Mr. Adam, I
actually studied at IU in 1983 with one of your outstanding graduate
students who got a job with an orchestra in Japan (Paul Anka's?) 2 lessons
before the semester was up..and could you tell his name now escapes
me?...Anyway, I had the distinct honor of playing for you for a final grade.
He had walked me through your method and had me read Inner Game and
Psychocybernetics and I learned methods I still incorporate not only in my
recreational and church trumpet stylings, but in my life as well... You were
such an indirect influence on me through his teaching. When you heard me
play, though, you gave me one of the highest compliments I ever received and
I can still tell the story with pride even today. I finished and you asked
me if I grew up in St. Louis...I replied I had and you said my sound could
then be explained...I sounded like a young SUSAN SLAUGHTER!... I must have
studied with her! I had not, but I dreamed of making a life at playing
trumpet and had hoped to one day be as incredible a player as she still is.
You have no idea how much confidence that gave me. I still wish I had
majored in Music which was the reason for my journey to IU. It was a magical
and fantastic time for me there, despite my Telecom degree :>....and my
years in the Marching 100, and studying a myriad of subjects including
trumpet prepared me for a productive and well lived post graduate life. I
only wish my fears and procrastination would not have kept me from chasing
the Bflat dream...practice practice!!! .I do play and sing (mostly wedding
gigs) and am currently working with a brass quartet at my church in Midtown
St. Louis, St. Francis Xavier...I'd love to give Susan a call someday and
ask if she'd take a new/old student...maybe I can afford her now! :>,,,Many
blessings to you on your birthday and best wishes for many years to come and
for continued beautiful music!

Happy birthday. I am so sorry I will not be able to attend your party. I
serve on the National Governance Committee for the Kennedy Center Alliance
for Arts Education Network. Our National Leadership Meeting is that weekend
in Washington, D.C. I regret that I could not get out of my obligations to
attend. There is never a time I put the horn to my face that I don't
thank you for all you have given me. Likewise, there is never a time when
faced with difficult human relations issues that I don't recall the many
words of advice you shared. My favorite one is "never do anything or say
anything to a person that will make them lose their sense of dignity."
Following that proverb has diffused many musical, political, work, and
social situations over the years for me. It has allowed me to "keep my head
when others are losing theirs." Thank you. It is also the gift which I have
passed on the most to others. I'm currently Vice President for Citizens'
Scbolarship Foundation of America in Minneapolis. That pays the bills. I
still introduce myself to people as a trumpet player. I play regularly in a
jazz band and in a quintet, the Minnehaha Brass, do miscellaneous jobbing,
and love the trumpet as much as ever.May this birthday bring you a
composite of all the joy which you have bestowed on others in your life. May
that mass of joy be what greets you each and every morning. Narissa and I
send our regards to Dorothy as well.Best wishes, Dave Bach

Message from Barry Springer (brspringer@aol.com), who is a former/current
student of Bill Adam currently residing in the US United States, wishes to
say... Happy Birthday, Mr Adam! I would like to take this opportunity not
only to wish you a happy 80th birthday, but also to thank you for all you
have done for me. You have helped me as a trumpet player, and as a human
being, giving all of us words of wisdom to help us live our lives and to
perpetuate our careers. When I was on the road, I found a greeting card with
"Promise Yourself" printed on the cover. I taped it above my bus seat, and
several times a week I would read it and choose one or two lines to try and
live by for that week. It now hangs in my studio for all my students to
read. If it were not for you, I may not be playing the trumpet today. Well,
maybe not, but it would definitely be harder and a lot more frustrating!!!
Thank you for your dedication, patience, and optimism in helping all of us
become who we are today. Your legacy will live on, not only as a teacher and
a trumpeter, but as a human being. God bless you.

Bill Adam currently residing in the US United States, wishes to say... Happy
80th Birthday, Bill Adam! Dear Mr. Adam, I just wanted to wish you a Happy
80th Birthday and hope life finds you well. I wanted to be there to join in
the celebration but unfortunately prior commitments would not allow me to
make the trip. However, my thoughts are there with you as they have been
numerous times during the many years since leaving Bloomington. I have
wonderful memories of that time and although I no longer play, your
teachings have influenced nearly every aspect of my life. I am certain that
if I had not had the privilege of studying with you, my life would be very
different today. It took a long time for me to really understand and
appreciate all that you taught me. But over the years, I gradually realized
the wisdom of your words and learned how to łkeep my mind in the sound". You
made a tremendous difference in my life and I owe much of my success to you.
Thank you. I wish you all the best and hope you have a wonderful, joyous
birthday with many more to come. Don Gates
